Teaching and Educating
In addition to tutoring students at Varsity, I have developed classes at Northstar Academy and served in various capacities at several locations, including Learning Tree educational co-op in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. I have taught various age groups, from preschool to adult, in Sunday school classes, children's church, the 12 Steps for kids, monthly homeschool support group classes, and American Heritage Girls. I taught a class on Christian Heroes, using Youth With a Mission (YWAM) curriculum, at Vineyard Columbus, Homeschool Network. In 2007 I taught a high school level literature and biblical world view course based on Dr. David Noebel's Understanding the Times curriculum (Summit Ministries). In 2006, I served as facilitator to teach Analyzing and Interpreting Media: A Literature and Worldview Course, at New Song Community church, and on-line. The course used the Starting Points curriculum, written by David Quine. In 1999 I was a contributing writer of Sunday school curriculum for Christian Education publishers, including the All Stars for Jesus Bible Club series for primaries.
I review curriculum resources for reading instruction, and researched the topic of reading methods (and the “language wars”) for my co-authored book Homeschooling on a Shoestring as well as columns for Practical Homeschooling magazine. I have used a variety of methods for teaching reading, as well as resources for reading instruction for students with special needs. I am currently completing the editing for my new book, The Educational Elephant's Memory school, packed full of memory tools, jokes, rhymes, picture balloon clues, play learning, keywords, learning style tips and ideas for kids in the elementary grades, their parents and teachers.
I have also written on the subject of a philosophy of Christian education based on God’s Word, in my blog, in my co-authored books, in my reviews of curriculum materials and in monthly columns for “Practical Homeschooling” magazine. In 1992-93 I wrote Sunday school curriculum (Teaching Methods and Student Response) for Adult Teacher magazine, published by Word-Action Publishing Company. I have planned, developed and used educational media, using graphics, projections, lettering, and displaying educational materials in the classroom. I have used and reviewed educational software, and in 1997, I served as an instructor in a Virtual University course, which pioneered electronic classroom technology at the Learning Network's Home Schooling Channel at Vu.org (VU is now http://vu.ksurf.net ) for a course at Virtual University.
EDUCATION
I hold a current teacher certification from Association of Christian Schools International (ASCI) and degree from GBS Aldersgate program (BA in Church and Family Ministries with a Cognate in Elementary Education, http://www.gbs.edu/adep).
I completed the course, Applied Principles of Learning (APL) in 1996 and earned a Certificate of Achievement, The 7 Laws of the Teacher, through Walk Thru the Bible Ministries with Dr. Howard G. Hendricks. I earned a Certificate of Biblical Understanding, PEERs Mini, from the Nehemiah Institute, in January 2006. In addition to life-time learning experiences, education research for writing projects, and self-directed study documented above, I have taught my own three children to read in a homeschool setting.
In May 1996, I was awarded a Masters Certificate as a Graduate of the Professional Division of the Christian Writer's Institute. The Institute at the time was headed by Christian journalism pioneer Robert Walker of Christian Life Missions, and founder of Creation House publishing. The Christian Writer's Institute Masters Certificate included the following courses: Christian Writing Techniques, Christian Fiction Writing, Christian Magazine Writing, Christian Juvenile Writing, and Writing the Christian Novel. In Christian Juvenile Writing in particular, I learned how to teach and write in the education field, from the perspective of God’s word; instructors included well-known book author Esther Vogt.
I have studied the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith, including God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I accepted Jesus as my savior and Lord in 1974, through the ministry of Bill Bright’s Campus Crusade for Christ. My husband and I currently attend Vineyard church. With the help of my husband, Hugh Morgan and courses at GBS, I researched, co-authored and published an evangelistic e-book Where Do You Want to Go Eternally? (You can download a copy from http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/17440 )
My most significant honor was to homeschool my three children. My oldest is a Homeschool graduate, an Army Military Police Sergeant. My oldest daughter graduated from homeschool high school, and is currently earning college credits in several fields, including psychology, criminal justice and graphic arts. My youngest is homeschooling high school with medical, speech and visual challenges.
