During these strange and trying times, it can be challenging to find frugal educational resources at yard sales, thrift stores and library book sales. However, many local homeschooling groups can still share resources, or periodically sell and exchange books among friends and families. Try these strategies to locate abundant downloadable frugal educational resources:
- Although homeschool groups may now be mostly virtual, you might be able to arrange to pickup or exchange resources with a local family (taking appropriate health precautions). Find local homeschool support groups or educational co-ops, by searching Homeschool World, https://www.home-school.com/groups/ . For more information, check Mary Pride’s Getting Started in Homeschooling, https://www.home-school.com/Articles/getting-started-in-homeschooling-the-first-ten-steps.php.
- Used and out of print electronic versions of classic books and older literature sets can also be located inexpensively through online sources such as archive.org and http://www.gutenberg.org.
- Find additional offerings at https://www.christianbook.com/page/ebooks/free-ebooks Bookfinder.com, Ebay.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Alibris.com, Google Books, or your favorite booksellers. (Note that many offer Apps for reading on your phone or other electronic device.) Sort by price, and you will often find dozens of free literature classics such as G. A. Henty's historical adventure children's book series. Try keywords; for instance, you might search for “free children classic literature.”
- For specific titles, try searching BookFinder.com by title. In most cases, you will find a lengthy list of available copies, sorted with information on editor and publication year.
- Check out one of my favorite educational freebie pages, Easy Peasy All-in-One-Homeschool, which offers a complete, free, online Christian homeschool curriculum, preschool to grade 12: https://allinonehomeschool.com/2020/08/17/whoever-receives-this-child
- Find ideas for frugal homeschooling in my book, Homeschooling on a Shoestring (Morgan and Allee, by Random House). About the book: “Let Homeschooling on a Shoestring come to your rescue with hundreds of tips for the family that wants to start or continue homeschooling. You'll get ideas for making money at home, inexpensive curriculum sources, affordable teaching tools, low-cost field trips, saving hints and more. 375 pages, indexed, softcover.”
- Search for “free ebooks” at CBD—ChristianBook.com. After that, sort by price: low to high, sale, homeschool, or whatever you wish. I am an affiliate, so portions of your purchases help support the EaglesNestHome.com web site. Thank you!
