Many students and parents are searching for information to help their kids understand the upcoming election. To that end, I scooped up this current freebie unit study (PDF format) from homeschool publisher, Sonlight: A Guide to Elections in the United States of America,
.
The study contains essential information on forms of government, branches of government, definitions and terms, election process and timeline, The electoral college,The political parties, How voting works, Suffrage,The polling process, Rules for electing the president, The Inauguration.Fun facts about elections, and more. I found that the book contains interesting, activity packed, well-written resources, written from a non-partisan Christian perspective. For all ages, I found the section comparing the pros and cons of direct democracy and representative democracy to be be particularly helpful, and a useful guide to stretch higher order thinking skills. I discovered new facts, such as: "John Quincy Adams didn’t take his oath on a Bible. Adams used a law book instead that included a copy of the Constitution."
I am familiar with Sonlight curriculum, but I do not represent them or necessarily endorse all their products. Over the years, we've explored a multitude of eclectic educational resources. Also, please note that you need to input your name and an email address in order to receive the download link. (This likely means you will be receiving information from the company to that email address.) Please let me know of any more free, useful educational resources you might find, to help our kids understand government.
